Edward Lee "Eddie" Whitfield, 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by his three daughters on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at Moses Cone Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, a son of the late Edward Ira "Nickel" Whitfield and Dorothy Lucille "Dot" Whitfield, he resided in Greensboro and the surrounding area his entire life. Eddie leaves behind three daughters that were his life, Angela Whitfield, Valerie Whitfield Grimm (Eric) and Laura Lee Whitfield; sister, Judith Daughtry (Tim) and brother Michael Whitfield (Patsy); his only nephew, Jacob Fine; last, two grandchildren, Rachel Elizabeth Grimm and Casey Reid Grimm, who meant the world to him.

Following graduation from Northeast High School, he went to Rockingham Community College. Eddie joined the Marines and graduated at the top of his class in 1970. Following his military career, Eddie worked at Cone Mills Corporation for 29 years. He led the sportswear division and served in many leadership positions.

Eddie was full of life with a large group of friends that he loved and was loved by all. He was an avid golfer as well as other hobbies including basketball, fishing and cars. He excelled at many sports. Two weeks prior to his death, Eddie participated in an 18-hole charity golf tournament and enjoyed the camaraderie with his friends. He loved everything Duke from basketball to football and for several years enjoyed membership as an Iron Duke. Even his dog was named Duke. Eddie was a patron of the community, beloved by all.

Eddie was a member of Westover Church joining and enjoying the community these last few years. A celebration of Eddie's life will be planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Veterans Association or the American Heart Association.
