Actor, TV Director, Producer, Screenwriter. He started out as an actor before moving on to behind the camera efforts as a distinguished director and producer which earned him more than a dozen Emmy Award nominations, most notably for the series "M*A*S*H." Born Burton Denis Metcalfe, he spent much of his childhood in Montreal before his family relocated to Los Angeles in 1949. After choosing to pursue a career in entertainment, he studied Theatre at UCLA and made his motion picture debut with a minor part in the William Holden film "The Bridges at Toko-Ri" (1954). Following a stint with the United States Navy, he found more roles of substance including his playing 'Lord Byron' in the film "Gidget" (1959) and a memorable performance in the "Twilight Zone" episode titled "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" (1960). He was cast as 'Buckley Dunston' in the short-lived TV adaptation of "Father of the Bride" (1961 to 1962). By the end of the 1960s, he turned to off-screen functions, initially as a casting director for the shows "Here Come the Brides" and "Bewitched." When the TV adaptation for "M*A*S*H" came to fruition, Metcalfe collaborated with Gene Reynolds as a driving force during the entire series' run (1972 to 1983), serving as associate/executive producer, director and writer. After the series ended, he went on to direct and produce episodes for the spinoff "After M*A*S*H" (1983 to 1985).
