Born in Troy on March 31, 1947, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Cummings) O'Neill.
Mary Beth grew up in Port Schuyler and was a 1965 graduate of Catholic Central.
She went on to continue her education, receiving a BS in Education from Russell Sage College.
After graduation she taught at Carroll Hill Elementary School in Troy, was a substitute teacher at Waterford-Halfmoon, and managed the Barbara Thomas Modeling School in Latham.
Mary Beth was very involved in efforts advocating for people with Multiple Sclerosis and was on the board of the New England Chapter of the MS Society. She bravely fought MS herself for over 40 years.
In her free time, Mary Beth loved to travel. She took trips all over the world with her husband and their friends, including vacations to Ireland, Italy, England, Spain, Greece, and annual summer trips to beach houses in North Carolina.
She was a founding member of her social sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, which was started in Clifton Park in the 1980s. She received the Award of Distinction from the National Headquarters of Beta Sigma Psi in 2020, of which only a small percentage of members are recognized with this prestigious award.
Mary Beth is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 52 years, Gerald R. Leonard of Waterford, their two children, Corrie (Glen) Martin of Wellesley, MA, and Kevin (Rachel) Leonard of Oakland, CA, her grandchildren; Ashley and Ryan Martin, and Havia and Cy Leonard, her sisters; Joanne (William) Burrows of Mechanicville, Kathy (Kevin) Mahoney of Utica, and Jeanne (Chris) Hoyt of Troy, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, the late Maureen Wilming.
Interment to follow the service in the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery.
