Obituary:

Robert Samuel Crawford, Sr., affectionately known by all as "Sonny or Deacon Crawford", went home to be with the Heavenly Father on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Sonny was born Tuesday, March 9, 1948, in Anniston, Alabama to the late Rose Lee Crawford-Broom. He was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin. He truly loved his family and friends. He was a Godly man and it was demonstrated in his daily walk. Until the pandemic, he was a faithful member of New Jerusalem Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. In the midst of the pandemic, he still participated through home visits from the pastor and church members. In addition, he enjoyed live-streaming Mount Canaan Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee and Pilgrim Rest in Montgomery, Alabama. Sonny was a dedicated and hard worker. He began his career at M & H Valve in Anniston, Alabama. Then in the early eighties he relocated to Chattanooga, TN, where he continued his career in the maintenance department of the Moccasin Waste Water Treatment Plant. He later added Erlanger Janitorial Services part-time.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Griff and Annie Pearl Edmondson; his four brothers, Freddie Fernando, John L. Kirby "Pedro", Marvin Kirby, Jr., Milton Kirby; and one sister, Caroline Kirby.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving and devoted wife of 36 years, Nazarene "Naz" Crawford; his four children, Dr. Julia Gaines, Robert S. Crawford, Jr. "Junior", Eugene "Gene" Gaines, Jr., and Kennya (Moriah) Tremble I along with several adopted sons and daughters; his 14 grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; his two sisters, Marion (Larry) Morris and Rosemary (Vivian) Kirby; a host of sisters and brothers-in-love, nephews, nieces, and cousins along with many friends because he never met a stranger.

"Sonny" will lie in state on Thursday, July 28, from 12:30-5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be on Friday, July 29, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel with Pastor Kelvert Scruggs as the eulogist. Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.
