Actress. She started out teaching in Elementary School in Chicago, but would later begin acting in small roles in theater productions in the 1960s and early 70s, in New York. She made her film debut in the movie, "The Education of Sonny Carson", and would go on to play Effie Williams in "Sparkle". On the Television side, she appeared in TV shows "Police Woman" and "Sanford and Son", and had a recurring role in the soap opera, "All My Children" and was later casted as Lettie Bostic in the show 'A Different World'. In 1987, she won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for "Fences" and would later go on to win an Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Drama series for "I'll Fly Away". She was also in other movies including, "Malcom X', "The Inkwell", and "Down in the Delta". In 2001, she replaced Gloria Foster, after her untimely passing, as the Oracle in "The Matrix Revolutions". She retired from acting in 2005.
