Gary Albert Smith was born April 14,1946 in Wilke, Saskatchewan to Marie and Norman Smith. He was two when they left the family farm and moved to Bentley Alberta to run their general store.
In 1949 David Norman was born before the move to Valhalla Centre, Alberta where they purchased a half section of land near Marie's family the Buchholdts.
Ronald Earling Smith was born in 1951 and died as an infant.
Sandra Marie Smith was born in 1954.
The Valhalla Centre farm was sold and the family moved briefly to Mallaig, then to Camrose before settling in Edmonton in 1965.
Gary completed high school in Camrose and had his first job, other than farming, in Thompson Manitoba working in a nickel smelter followed by several years with Hudson Bay Oil and Gas as a roughneck.
Gary and brother Dave had an advertising company for a time before returning to the oilfield.
Gary moved to Elnora, Alberta and started a heavy duty equipment business. He met and married Lori Jewell.
The marriage ended and he left with his beloved dog Sarah. Gold mining in Likely,BC was his next venture. After finding there was no gold he moved back to the city where he worked at various things including experimental market gardening, then spent the last decade driving a mushroom delivery truck.
Gary had lots of vehicles: a Harley, a Cadillac hearse, several trucks, and his favourite of all a 1968 Olds 98.
In 2011 Gary retired and moved to Powell River joining an adventure in off grid living with Sandra, Eric, TIffany and Curt and their four kids.
He worked hauling wood and helping in home construction.
Gary's health declined over the years starting with a hip replacement followed by a stroke then prostate cancer. This was all complicated by AFIB and COPD.
Gary was happy at the coast and loved being part of the big family.
He treasured his many friends and family.
His last days were spent at the Evergreen Care Facility in Powell River where he received exemplary care and was given the opportunity to go out on his own terms with M.A.I.D thereby ending the extreme suffering of his failing organs.

Gary was predeceased by his Dad in 1975, brother Ronald in 1951, brother Dave in 2006 and Mother in 2010.

We sent him off with much love Saturday July 23, 2022.
