WILLIAM GAYNOR BRITT
Publication Date: January 24, 2008

SAN ANGELO - William Gaynor Britt passed away at Triumph Hospital in San Angelo, Texas, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008. He was 92 years old and surrounded by loving family at the time of death. Mr. Britt was a lifelong Texan. Born in Junction, Texas, Bill was one of seven children. His father and mother were schoolteachers; his father Clarence Britt was the superintendent of schools for Junction, Texas. Mr. Britt attended the University of Texas and graduated from George Washington University. He was a salesman and a sales manager for McBee Systems, a division of Litton Industries, until he retired in 1983. He served in the U.S. Air Forces from 1941 until 1946 as a pilot and pilot instructor. Much of his service was in Alaska. Mr. Britt married Edyth Thaggard in 1949. Together they raised two children, William Gaynor Britt Jr. and Bradley Thaggard Britt. They were devoted to each other, and to their marriage, until Edyth's death in the mid-1980s. Mr., Britt also saw the untimely passing of his youngest son, Bradley Britt, who succumbed to cancer in 1995. Mr. Britt was remarried in 1989 when he exchanged wedding vows with Jean Stone Britt in San Antonio. The two of them made San Angelo their home until Jean's recent death in November, 2007. Mr. Britt was loved by many, both family and friends. He was known for his kind, respectful and generous ways and for his positive attitude. He was fond of reminding his family to "keep your altitude and your sense of humor" and he lived by those words. He was and remains a wonderful role model for his family. Mr. Britt was known for making friends every where he went, and for random acts of kindness, such as anonymously buying lunch for service members dining at Mr. T's Deli. Mr. Britt was an avid golfer who traveled to many of the world's golf courses during his life. In more recent years, he was a member of the San Angelo Country Club where he loved to play golf with his friends. Mr. Britt loved to play bridge and gather for lunch on Fridays with friends who formed the ROMEOS club - Real Old Men Eating Out. Mr. Britt is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, William Britt and Nancy Nolan; and his grandson, Brian Britt of Anchorage, Alaska. In addition, he is survived by his daughter-in-law, Stephanie Britt; and his two grandsons, James and Richard Britt of Plano, Texas. Mr. Britt is also survived by loving family in San Angelo, including daughter and son-in-law Bryce and Mark Thieman; and grandchildren Joe and Drew Thieman; son and daughter-in-law Che and Bitsy Stone; and grandchildren Lamar and Preston Stone. The Britts all feel blessed by the wonderful caregivers who helped ease the way. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at First United Methodist Church in San Angelo. A private family graveside service will be held on Saturday at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Memorial donations may be made to some of Mr. Britt's favorite charities, which include West Texas Boys Ranch, First United Methodist Church and Meals for the Elderly.
