Ronald G. Martin, age 85, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, went to be with the Lord, Monday, July 11, 2022, following a short battle with cancer. He was born December 12,1936 in Chicago to Clifford & Melva Martin.

Ron grew up on the Northside of Chicago in Andersonville and was proud of his Swedish heritage. As a child and teenager, he spent many summers on the family farm in Holdrege, Nebraska and loved to talk about those memories. He graduated with honors from Lane Tech High School in Chicago in 1955. He then met Barb Lindell at First Evangelical Free Church of Chicago and they began dating. He attended University of Illinois at Navy Pier for 2 years and then served his country in the Active Navy Reserves for seven and half years. Barb graduated from nurses training and they were married in 1962. They would have celebrated their 60th Anniversary this September.

After the birth of their first child, Rob, in 1963 they moved to Champaign Urbana where Ron finished his Bachelors in Electrical Engineering at the University of Illinois. While working as researcher on the Iliac III computer, Ron completed his Masters in Electrical Engineering. During that time Jon was born in 1967, followed by their daughter Jani in 1968. The family moved to Wheaton, Il in 1969 where Ron took a job at Fermilab to be a part of the computer team working on the accelerator when it was being built. Ron worked for a number of technology companies over his 59 year career and even had the opportunity to meet President Reagan while attending an International Standards Committee at the White House. He was a member of this group for 9 years. In 1998, Ron transferred to Florida for a new job at Veritas Software. This would be his most challenging, yet most rewarding, job as he built compatibility labs in Asia, Europe and the US. He enjoyed mentoring the young men and women in these labs. Many stayed in touch with him long after he retired. He retired in 2005 and Ron and Barb moved back to Wheaton to be near their children and 11 grandchildren.

He dearly loved his family and was a great support and encourager to Barb in her work and his kids as they grew up. He attended countless sporting events, cheering and assisting at his sons' football games at Wheaton North and Wheaton College and all of his kids other sports. He was a Cub Scout leader and Boys Brigade leader as well. He was a devoted "Papa" to his 11 grandchildren and was very involved in all of their lives. He enjoyed attending their concerts, sporting events, art shows, musicals and any other activities they were involved in at church and school.

Ron was passionate about his faith and was an active member of Glen Ellyn Covenant Church for 53 years. He served in a variety of roles from Chair of the Church, Treasurer, Trustee board member, working on the tech team, sound team, and as a mentor to the young married couples. He was a founding member of International Sports Ministries (ISM), served on the board for many years and became the president of ISM from 2005-2013. He also enjoyed mentoring students at the Oasis Training School in Ping Liang China and Chinese students he and Barb hosted at their home in the summer while they worked in the tourist industry of Door County, WI.

Ron was known for his great sense of humor, his many, many "dad jokes" and his distinct laugh. He loved to laugh and play games with his family and friends. He pursued many hobbies. Ron was an avid reader, played golf with his sons and friends, enjoyed woodworking in Door County and at Windsor Park, loved Hot Rods (and was known to drag race here and there during his youth), taking his boat out on Green Bay, spending time with friends and family, photography and listening to his many, many classical CDs.

Ron never met a stranger. He was humble, kind, gentle and generous to all he met. These traits were appreciated by all those who cared for him in his final weeks. He deeply loved his wife Barb, his family and most of all his Savior, Jesus Christ, whom he is with now.

He is survived by his wife for nearly 60 years, Barb; his children Rob (Vicky) Martin, Jon (Andrea) Martin & Jani (Scott) Casto; his 11 grandchildren: Carl, Hannah, & John Martin; Anders, Annika, & Eva Martin; and Matthew (Ann), Andrew, Claire, William, & Anna Casto. Also survived by his nephew Matt Gall, brother-in-law Bruce Lindell, and nieces Elise (Kevin) Scott, Kjirsten (Adam) Becker, and a great-niece Harper.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Lynn (the late Frank) Gall.

A memorial service will be held at Glen Ellyn Evangelical Covenant Church, 277 Hawthorne Blvd, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137 on July 30, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. Inurnment will take place privately at Wheaton Cemetery.
