Abraham Nathaniel Zell, a well-known and highly-respected citizen of Lancaster, died suddenly about one o'clock on Thursday afternoon, at the home of his son, Wm. D. Zell, No. 441 West Walnut street. Mr. Zell had not been enjoying good health for some time, but was able to attend to business and nothing serious was apprehended. He was down town on Thursday morning, and after going home he complained of being ill and went up stairs to his room and threw himself on the bed. Shortly afterward he was heard groaning loudly and a few moments later he died, death being the result of heart trouble. Deceased was in his sixty-third year. He was born at Reamstown, this county, and came to Lancaster when a boy to learn the cabinet-maker's trade. He became a skilled hand and gave evidence of having an inventive mind. He also learned the blacksmith's trade and at this he also became an excellent mechanic. Many years ago he built elevators and other machines, and at one time worked at Harrisburg. In Lancaster, he carried on the wood-bending business for some time. In 1871 he invented a very useful machine, the lever power tobacco press, which is in general use all over the country among leaf tobacco packers, and his name is familiar with the men in the leaf business. He leaves a wife and nine children, as follows: Wm. D., Albert K., Charles L., George, Edward, Richard, Misses Lizzie and Christie, and Mrs. Mary Rudy, wife of Elias Rudy. (The Semi-Weekly New Era - Dec 2, 1893)
