Richard served his country in the United States Navy and was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Greer. He was a past President of Freewheelers Bicycle Club and cycled "The Assaults" on Mount Mitchell. Richard was known for being very athletic and loved to play golf and bike. His love for sports began at an early age and continued into High School where he joined many teams and organizations. Richard finished 2nd in the state in his weight division in High School wrestling, along with swimming, cheerleading, and singing in the choir. Not only did Richard play these sports, he went on to volunteer his time coaching many of these same sports for his son. He was also in the Greenville Chorale and sang in the choir at church. Richard enjoyed coaching and helping others and often lived by the saying, "half of life is showing up." Richard was an encourager, a motivator, and was truly loved by those around him.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his son, Hunter Janes; his sister, Patti Janes; and his brother-in-law, John Dickey.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Stephen Michael Janes.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2022 from 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM at Memorial United Methodist Church; 209 N. Main Street Greer, SC 29650; with a service to begin at 12:45 PM. A private interment will be held at MJ Dolly Cooper at a later date.
