Karen Lynne Blose Taylor, until recently of Crozet, Va., passed away from Alzheimer disease on Sunday, May 22, 2022, in Lake Placid, Fla.
Karen was born in Detroit, Michigan. She lived in Ferguson, Missouri during her middle school years, and later in Arlington, Virginia, for her high school (Yorktown) and college years. At Radford College she earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education. Also at Radford, she met her future husband, Virginia Tech student Emery Taylor, when he saw her beautiful face across the crowded room at a Radford mixer.
After marriage to Emery on August 22, 1970, Karen taught kindergarten in Chesterfield County from 1970-73 while Emery was in dental school in Richmond. Preceding marriage, she taught kindergarten in Arlington County. After moving to Crozet, she was a Brownie troop leader in the late 70s and early 80s. Starting in July, 1984, she taught for Charlottesville Head Start, later becoming an administrator. In 1990 she joined the UVA Health System as assistant director and later as director of the Malcolm Cole Child Care Center, retiring in 2005. She was a member of the Virginia Association of early Childhood Education and helped organize conference for that group. She also was involved with the formation of the Charlottesville Day School. She volunteered at Martha Jefferson as a patient advocate and was a member of Tabor Presbyterian Church.
Karen had two daughters, Heather, while living in Richmond, and Kimberly, after moving to Crozet. Between Richmond and Crozet, Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, NY was home. Crozet was home for 45 years until moving to Florida to be near Kimberly and her family in January 2021. There were so many things she loved including Friday night dinner dates, playing with the grandkids, family and friends, cooking, wine, gardening, shopping for clothes and shoes, traveling music, especially Peter Paul and Mary, our many dogs and cats, the beach, eggs benedict, and softshell crabs.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents Louise M. and John H. Blose, a sister, Barbara Thomas, a brother, Jack Blose, and nephew, Don Blose. She leaves behind her husband, Dr. Emery Taylor (2900 Lyrical Lane #8115, Melbourne FL, 32940), daughter Heather Taylor of San Diego, CA, daughter Kimberly Nicoletti, granddaughters Ruby and Millicent "Millie" Nicoletti, and son-in-law Keith Nicoletti, all of Melbourne, FL. The granddaughters called Karen "Gigi." She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, a childhood friend, Marianne McGee of St. Louis, MO, and her college roommate, Sandy Crabtree of Charlottesville, a dear friend Mary Margaret (MM) Gardiner who has been a huge support to our family in so many ways during Karen's illness, longtime next door neighbors Ty and Judy Heilman, and many friends and acquaintances, mostly from Crozet, including the Crozet Volleyball Team, the education community, and the 43 years she enjoyed her Bridge Club.
