Paul H. Harms

February 11, 1927 - October 24, 2005

DALLAS - Paul was born in Salem, Ore. to George G. and Sue Regehr Harms Ewert. When he was a small child they moved to Dallas. His family attended the Mennonite Brethren Church and it was there that Paul gave his heart to the Lord. He was baptized in the Luckimute River in the Bridgeport area when he was ten years old. He attended Fir Villa School on the eastern edge of Dallas for eight years, then finished his public schooling at Dallas High.

He enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and served two years on an airbase somewhere in California. After he was discharged, he enrolled in the La Tourneau school in Texas and was there for a year. Then he came home and went to Multnomah School of the Bible for two years.

In May of 1951, he married Evelyn Thiessen. They settled in Dallas into a small home he had built especially for them.

After a few years of working on the floor assembly at Gerlinger Carrier Co., he decided to go to O.T.I. (now, Oregon Institute of Technology) and graduated with a degree in Engineering. He came back to Salem and began to work for Clark and Groff Engineering. Then he went to Stevens Equipment where he worked for 29 years. After retirement he was asked to work at Rust International in Beaverton, so he commuted for several years. Then he found work closer to home at Pacific Stair in Brooks and he ended his career there.

He and Evy had three children. Two of the children died as adults, Debby of cancer and Dale of a heart problem. Evy also died of a heart problem.

Then, Paul married a longtime family friend, Martha ‘Marty' Thiessen Warkentin. They were together for about a year when she died of a massive infection.

Paul was an avid photographer and used his talent in the schools he went to as well as the churches he attended, taking pictures of special events. He was also into electronics and had faithfully taped the sermons and choir music for shut-ins and missionaries.

Six years ago he married Lydia Hiebert of Dallas. They have traveled extensively to visit her relatives and to visit the place where his mother grew up.

He is survived by his widow, Lydia; son, Mark of Salem; grandsons, Daniel and Matt Oldfield of Salem; sister, Marilyn Suderman and husband, Lee of Dallas; brothers, Philip and wife, Joyce of Federal Way, Wash. and Tim and wife, Sandy of Alviso, Calif.; 1 niece, 4 nephews, and numerous first cousins. He was preceded in death by Evy and Marty, daughter, Debby Harms Oldfield; and son, Dale.

The lord has gently called him home to Heaven.

"My times are in your hands." Psalm 31:15

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Sat., Oct. 29, 2005, at Evangelical Bible Church in Dallas. Memorials are suggested to the church tape ministry or to hospice in care of Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center, 287 Washington St., Dallas, OR 97338. On-line condolences can be sent to www.dallastribute.com.
