Elijah married Eliza Cooper daughter of Bluford Cooper and Elizabeth Jacobs on December 10, 1866 in Caswell County, North Carolina. Their children were Frances L., Bera Jane, James Samuel and May.
Elijah was a Sgt. in the Civil War. From the North Carolina Civil War books at the library - it reads - "Resided in Person County and enlisted in Caswell County at the age of 19, July 1, 1861. Mustered in as Private and promoted to Corporal on April 26, 1862. Present and accounted for until wounded at Sharpsburg, Maryland, Sept. 17, 1862. Rejoined the company in Sept/Oct 1863 and was promoted to Sergant on December 26, 1863. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Va. April 9, 1865."
Also, He was first buried in the O'brien family cemetery on family property then maybe about 20 years ago his grave, his wife's grave, and his parent's grave was moved to the Cooper Cemetery. Who had these graves moved is a mystery. From the way that the wording is printed on the stones, it looks like whoever it was copied it strait from a Bible that I have that once belonged to my grandmother.
Information provided by his great-grandson, William H. Motley.
