Judith Lark Madlinger Burns of Howell, MI, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2022, surrounded by loved ones at SJMH in Ypsilanti, MI.

Judy was born at home in Clayton, MO, to Carl Joseph and McLean Young Madlinger on June 25, 1935, with the accredited Dr. Hub Pruett in attendance. She was a bundle of infectious energy. Judy came from a small, tight-knit family with one brother, John Stearns Madlinger. Her father, Carl, was an accomplished pianist who also taught piano; one notable student was Malcolm Frager. Music was an important part of Judy's life; she played the violin and piano. After graduating from Clayton High School at 16, she attended Washington University in St. Louis. Judy was an active Gamma Phi Beta member and was proud to be a member of the D.A.R..

In 1954, Judy met the love of her life, James Carl Burns, on a blind date. Meeting and marrying Jim, one of 6 children, on June 7, 1955, changed her life dramatically. Her life would go on to be fulfilling and rewarding. She had always dreamed of having a huge family - family was everything to Judy - and she and Jim would share 48 ½ years and 7 children before he passed on 12/21/2003. Homes included Fergusen, MO, and Farmington, MI, before her dream country home in Howell, MI.

Judy was passionate about history from a very young age. She was an accomplished local historian who participated in several organizations, including serving on the board of Oceola Township Trustees, volunteering at the Howell Library Archives (2009 Volunteer of the Year!), working as Honorary Director of the Howell Depot Museum (she delighted in sharing her local knowledge and love of Howell history with school field trips), and researching historic buildings for the National Registry of Historic Places. She obtained historical registry status on numerous local homes and businesses. Her love of everything historic also included antique shopping and poking around at flea markets, estate sales, and garage sales.

Judy was equally passionate about animals. After competitively showing Irish Setters in her youth, Judy shared her love of animals with her husband and children. Aside from cats, dogs, horses, Clarabell the pet cow, and the occasional raccoon, Jim and Judy owned Pine Ridge Kennels and bred, trained, and showed AKC Rottweilers from the 1960s-1980s. Animals continued to bring Judy comfort throughout her life.

Judy was predeceased by her husband, James C. Burns, father Carl J. Madlinger, mother McLean S. Young, step-mother Paula A. Jens Goetsch Madlinger, brothers John S. Madlinger and wife Helen, Carl J. Madlinger, Jr., father-in-law James J. Burns, mother-in-law Bernice V. (Wess), sister-in-law Kathleen A., brother-in-law Patrick M. and wife Betty, sister-in-law Eleanor M. and husband John R. Reale.

She leaves behind her seven children: James K. (Shelly), Robin M. (Al Karow), Michael S., Jeffrey S. (Maria), Christopher T. (Katie), Darrin J. (Anne), and Kelly M. (Rob Renton). Judy also leaves behind: mother-in-law Edna, brother-in-law John R. (Millie), sister-in-law Janet M., 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes MacDonald Chapel, 315 N. Michigan Ave., Howell, MI, 48843 on September 17, 2022, at 10 am. A Celebration of Life will directly follow for family and friends.
