Armina LeClear's Obituary - Gary, South Dakota, Friday March 29,
1912:
Mrs. J. V. Wells
The village of Gary is in mourning, for one of it's oldest and best loved
citizens has departed, not to return. For more than thirty years Grandma
Wells, as she was lovingly called by everybody, has been a welcome visitor
in every home, and the doors of her home were always open to all both young
and old. She is gone, and the feeling prevails that each one has sustained a
personal loss. She was a lovable woman, and her many acts of kindness and
words of advice and cheer will be cherished in the memory of all those who
have been fortunate enough to claim her as a friend.
Mrs. J. V. Wells died at her home in Gary Monday morning at two O'clock. The
end was a peaceful as the setting of the sun in a clear sky. For a long time
she has been confined to the house, and much of the time to her bed. Her
extreme age precluded the possibility of recovery, although everything that
could be done for her comfort and health was lavishly bestowed by loving
hands.
Armina LeClair was born in Boston, Erie county, New York, May 25 1827 (note:
the year disagrees with family bible records showing 1826), and was the
daughter of Aaron and Laura LeClair. She lived with her parents until she
was twenty-five years old, when she went to live with her grandparents at
Marshall, Michigan. In 1852 Mr. And Mrs. Wells moved to Black River Falls
Wisconsin, and in 1878 they moved to Gary, where they have since resided.
While in Black River Falls, thirty five years ago, Mrs. Wells took two
orphan boys to her heart and loved and cared for them as a mother. She was a
member of the Presbyterian church in Gary, having united fifteen years ago
from Black River Falls by card, and has always been a consistent member.
Grandma Wells was prominently identified with various societies and was
always a worker. She was a member of the Ladies Circle, and also of the
W.C.T.U. when the Eastern Star lodge was organized some eleven or twelve
years ago, she was a charter member, and also the first chaplain and the
first treasurer of that society.
She leaves her husband, two foster sons, eleven grandchildren, one sister
and one brother, besides everyone in Gary who mourn her departure.
The funeral services were held at the house at two O'clock on Thursday
afternoon, and were under the supervision of the Order of the Eastern Star,
and the beautiful and impressive service of that order was given. Rev. G. A.
Wickwire of the Presbyterian church spoke very feelingly for a short time
from II Cor: IV, 17-18. Rever. A. J. Oliver assisted, very materially in the
services.
The casket containing all that was mortal of Grandma Wells was decorated
with beautiful flowers, which came from those who loved her. With sorrowing
hearts the remains were accompanied to Grand View cemetery where they were
tenderly laid to rest to await the final resurrection, when there shall be
no more parting forever.
