OSWEGO, KS. - Bertha Mable Ellison, 87, passed away Friday, Jan. 25, 2008.

She was born on April 20, 1920, in Bartlett, Kansas, the fifth child of Harry M. and Anna Marie (Nickel) Baird.

She was a lifelong Labette County resident. She graduated from Labette County High School.

She taught for six years in the normal training program in rural Labette County schools. She then worked for three years in the accounting department of the Katy Railroad offices until her marriage.

She married Elwyn D. Ellison on Dec. 15, 1945, in Oswego, Kansas. Together they farmed the family farm in the Big Hill area between Mound Valley and Cherryvale. He died on Feb. 21, 1992. Following his death, she moved to Oswego in 1993.

Mable had been a member of the Mound Valley Methodist Church since 1968, and remained as an associate member. She joined the United Methodist Church in Oswego in 1994, and later transferred to the First Baptist Church in 2002.

Mable was known for the beautiful crafts she made and enjoyed sharing with her friends, including cooking, sewing, quilting, crocheting, stained glass, and cake decorating. She enjoyed displaying her crafts at the Labette County Fair and displayed at the 2007 fair.

She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Strickland and husband, Albert, of Oswego, KS; and two grandchildren, Cynthia Dean and husband, Jeff, of Oswego, KS, and Jeffrey Allen of San Diego, CA; and four great-grandchildren, Sarah Carter and Gwyneth, Easton and Anna Grace Dean, all of Oswego, KS.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles, Elmer, Perry and Mike.

The service will be at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Tom Reazin, David Domansky and John Stone officiating. Burial will be at the Mound Valley Cemetery in Mound Valley, Kansas.

Memorials may be made to the Oswego Parks and Community Foundation.
