James was the son of Layne Compton and Melsena Hatton. He married Rebecca Jane Rose (divorced), Samantha Hitchcock, Sarah Blankenship, and Chloe Parsley.

James' mother died at his birth in 1848. He resided with relatives (great uncle James Shannon, then Harvey "Moore" and Eleanor Chapman Compton) in Lawrence Co., KY. During the Civil War, he was in the 53rd or 58th Voluntary Mounted Infantry of Kentucky, having enlisted in Louisa, KY. By the end of the war, he contracted fever and spent time in a hospital in Morehead, and eventually received a pension for his service.

James wrote the following about his family: "John Compton born 1873; Melvin Compton born 1875; Ella Compton born 1879; Jipsey Compton born 1881; Liss Compton born 1890; Mary Compton born 1899. All born in Lawrence Co., KY and all living but Liss who died in Ashland, KY Dec. 20, 1912; 2 infants dead - forgot their age and date of their deaths." Signed James Compton, April 17, 1915."

James was a farmer.In 1870, he was in Lawrence Co., KY, in 1880 - Peach Orchard, Lawrence Co., KY, In 1900 - Johnson Co., KY, and in 1910 he lived "south of N&W Railroad, Kermit Town, Mingo Co., WV., and in 1920 he lived on Lincoln St., Kermit, WV. He died from complications following prostate surgery.
