Char attended Fairview High School graduating in 1954, and received an optical license in 1983. She was a full-time mother and worked part-time at White House Optical. In 1982 she worked for Optical Fashions for a few years and then got a CDL and went to work as a bus driver for the Dayton City Schools in 1983 until her retirement in 2003.
