Death of Rome Vaughn.
The death of Rome Vaughn which occurred at his home near Dayton, Mo., yesterday, removes from us another of the old timers who cast their lot in Galena in the early day. Deceased was among the very first to locate in the mines and lived here until about two years ago, when he purchased a farm near Dayton and has resided there ever since. He took sick on Friday the 11th, with pneumonia and continued to grow worse until death ensued. He leaves a wife and two children, a son and daughter, who have the sympathy of the community in this hour of great sorrow. The remains will be brought here today for interment in the city cemetery. The services will be held at the grave.

Family:
It is thought that maybe his parents or grandparents were John age 64 (age difficult to determine), and Mary "Vann or Vaun" age 32, in the Morgan County, Alabama 1850 census. "Romie", age 11 born in South Carolina, was listed with John and Mary, both noted as from North Carolina, and his siblings, James, born in NC, sister Amanda, born in South Carolina, and older brother Robert A, age 14 also born in SC. Either James or Amanda may not have been a sibling as they were ages 30 and 26, respectively, but could also have been parents.

Rome's first wife was Mary Ann Counts Vaughan. After her death which occured in 1873, according to her Findagrave memorial, He second married Mattie Jenkins, on 27 Nov 1878, in Jasper County, Missouri. (After Rome's death, she married Charles C. McNatt, in Neosho, Newton County, Missouri, on December 12. 1898.)

In Brown County, Texas, near the Camp Colorado post office in 1860, living adjacent, were William J Vaughan age 39 born in North Carolina, his wife Martha A age 34 born in Alabama, Mary E Vaughan age 7 born in Alabama, Mary B Vaughan age 63 born in NC, and R. W. Vaughan age 21, born in South Carolina.

1870 found R. W. Vaughn, age 31, raising cattle and living in Brown County, Texas, with his wife, Mary Ann, native of Missouri born about 1848, and children Mary L E Vaughn age 3 born in Texas, and Amanda Vaughn age 1, also born in Texas. Also in the household was J. L. Counts, a teacher, age 25, born in Missouri, most likely a brother of Mary Ann. It is thought that Mary Ann Counts was the daughter of Joel L. Counts, and was living with Joel and his wife Mary L. (Thomas) Counts in Saline, Ste. Genevieve, Missouri, in 1850. His first wife was Mississippi "Isippa" Daniel Counts, who died in 1859. Mary Ann was living with Joel and Mary L. in 1850 and in 1860, and Mississippi Daniel Counts may have been her mother. But Mary L. died in Brown County, Texas, in 1863, and their marriage happened in 1843, so she may have been the mother. Joel Counts and Mary Thomas had married in Missouri in 1843.

1880 found the family in Galena, Kansas: Rome, his wife Mattie, and the children, Ella born about 1867 in Texas, "Romus" N. age 3 born about 1877 in Kansas, and Frank L, age 3 months, born in April in Kansas.

Rome was found in many newspaper articles before 1880, beginning with 1877; usually listed either as Rome, occasionally as Jerome, or as R. W. Vaughan.

His daughter, Ella Vaughan first married Merrill Straude Renick, and after his death, married Joseph Milton Helm. Both marriages occurred in Cherokee County, Kansas.

His son, Romulus Napolean Vaughan, died on March 9, 1921 in Carterville, Missouri.
