Eugene W. Abrams, 88, of Mansfield, entered eternal life on Friday, March 4, 2016, after a long illness. Gene, son of Ralph Abrams and Ann Vaow Abrams, graduated from Tunkhannock High School in 1945 just after VE Day. He promptly joined the Merchant Marines where he was involved with the transport of military goods and battle-weary troops from the final months of the European theater. He then spent a post-war year in the Army in occupied Japan. Gene loved to travel and was pleased to say that he had crossed both major oceans by the time he was 18. Gene spent his professional years in several positions with Jersey Central Power and Light and then Penelec for 30 years. Despite sometimes working long hours in bad weather and under challenging circumstances, he loved to tell stories of the many adventures experienced while helping to restore power during and after storms and other natural disasters in Pennsylvania and other Eastern states and Canada. He enjoyed meeting and interacting with the many customers whom he met even while on routine service calls and happily shared those stories even after accepting other positions at Penelec.

Despite a love for travel, it was well known that Gene's favorite things were a chainsaw, logs to cut, a pile of seasoned wood, the stove in which to burn it, and his cozy recliner in the living room on Pickle Hill from where he would watch the moon rise on a clear evening. He loved to be active and was always planning ahead for family needs and following through on whatever he needed or wanted to do for us. He enjoyed carving out his "estate" on Pickle Hill for 45 years and was member of the United Methodist Church in Mansfield.

Gene loved to share laughter and was generous in countless other ways, as well as interested in the world around him. He would have been lost without the love and dedication of his beloved wife of 65 years, Alice Harding. He adored and was very proud of his three grandchildren, telling everyone about them even during his final days.

Gene was predeceased by parents, a brother, sister and their spouses and is survived by Alice; two children, Charol (Dan) Clementi, Kevin (Mary Simmons); three granddaughters, Alicia (Ben) Augustine, Emily and Cara Clementi; two great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Norman Harding; numerous nieces and nephews.

The family requests no flowers and, if desired, please donate to Aid to the Church in Need.

Friends are invited to call at the Wilston Funeral Home, 130 S. Main St., Mansfield, on Monday, March 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 8, at 9:30 a.m., at Holy Child Catholic Church, S. Main St. Mansfield
