Son of Edward Smith (1775-1838) and Elizabeth "Betty" nee Tamms (1778-1841). He married Catherine Hancock (nee Marsh) 2 Aug 1841 and they had one son, Edward John Smith (1850-1912). He died 7 October at home (30 Well Street Hanley). Aged 59, he had finally succumbed to phthisis (a form of pulmonary tuberculosis) from which he had been suffering for some time. He was buried in Hanley Municipal Cemetery on the 11th Oct 1864.

His son Edward John Smith was Captain of the Titanic.
