James E. Tapley, 83, of Walterboro, SC, passed away July 14, 2022. Jim was born in Charleston and was raised in Bucyrus, Ohio. After one year at the Citadel, Jim served as an Army paratrooper in the 18th Airborne Corps. Jim eventually married the love of his life, Bennie Tapley, settling in Goose Creek to raise their family. He was an electrician by trade working in Shop 99 at the Charleston Naval Shipyard until his retirement in the mid 80's. Jim was the first Worshipful Master of the Macarthur #427 Masonic Lodge in Goose Creek. Jim had many hobbies including painting, constructing model ships and model airplanes, which he flew, hunting and dog training. Jim was an avid lover of history and was involved in Civil War reenacting, serving as the Colonel of The Palmetto Battalion, a founding member of the 27th SC Infantry and a member of the 10th SC Infantry. Of all his passions, Jim truly LOVED fishing, especially Rooster fishing in Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Jim enjoyed a good meal. His family will forever remember him and his love of food when they are enjoying huevos rancheros and fish prepared Veracruz style!
Jim was born September 23, 1938 to Elsie Baron and James E. Tapley, Sr. Jim leaves behind a son, John Glenn Tapley of Canadys, SC, daughter Rhonda R. Tapley (Joel) of Mt. Pleasant, SC, a brother, Raymond Royall of Baton Rouge, LA, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Bennie Tapley, son, Donald B. Tapley and grandson, Jeffrey Deguzman. The family will receive friends at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at the funeral home. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 at Canaan Baptist Church, 12760 Augusta Highway, Walterboro, SC 29488. Burial will follow the service at Woodlands Cemetery in Canadys, SC. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Charleston Animal Society (www.charlestonanimalsociety.org) or Friends of Colleton County Animal Shelter (www.foccas-sc.org).
