He answered the call to arms by Pres. Lincoln, enlisting as a private on August 16, 1862. On Sep 8, 1862 he was enrolled in Company B., 97 Illinois Infantry, where he served for 3 years. He was mustered out July 29, 1865.
Following the war, he moved to Chase County, Kansas where he established a farm.
He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Critser, daughter of William August & Sarah L. (Todd) Critser, on June 17, 1867 in Chase County, Kansas. To this union, 11 known children were born: Emma Elizabeth (Piles) Park, Martha Melissa Mattie (Piles) Longfellow, William T. Piles, Esta C. Piles, Richard Jefferson Piles, Daniel E. Piles, David Piles, Esther M. (Piles) Shaft, Alice Marion (Piles) Grissom/Greshom, Ethelind Ethel (Piles) Shaft, and Mildred Jane (Piles) Railsback/Railstack.
Following the death of Elizabeth in 1893, he moved to Oregon, settling in Hood River County, Oregon, in about 1909. He was again united in marriage in about 1911 to Mary E. (?) Brooke.
He answered the summons to the spirit world from his home in Hood River, Hood River County, Oregon at the age of 72y, 1m, 27d.

The funeral of the late Thomas Jefferson Pyles, Civil war veteran, who passed away Monday of last week, was conducted at the home the following Wednesday afternoon, Rev. J. B. Lister, pastor of the Valley Christian church officiating. Interment followed at Idlewilde cemetery. Members of Canby Post, Grand Army, were pallbearers.
Mr. Pyles, who was 72 years of age, was a member of the 97th Illinois Regiment. He came to Hood River from Kansas nine years ago.
Mr. Pyles as (sic) survived by ten children, 21 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. The children are: Jefferson Pyles, Cedar Park [Point?], Kas.; Mrs. Emma Park and W. P. Pyles, of Glendale, Kas.; Mrs. Esther L. Shaft and Mrs. Ethel Shaft, Clement, Kas.; Mrs. Martha M. Longfellow and Mrs. James Hailstack, Peru, Nebr.; D. C. Pyles, of Suison, Calif.; Mrs. M. Grimson, Tacoma, Wash.; and David Pyles, of Hood River.
The veteran is also survived by his widow.
