Mrs. Susanah Lewis was born in Hancock County, Indiana, September 7, 1827 and died in Cedar Vale, Kansas, January 5, 1899, aged 71 years, 3 months, and 28 days. At the age of 19 years she was married to William S. Lewis and with her husband removed to Andrew County, Missouri, where she resided until 1858, when with her family she removed to Richardson County, Nebraska. In 1863 she returned to Andrew County, Missouri. Her husband was killed in the United States Army in 1865. She afterwards married James H. Lewis, a brother of her former husband. Three years later he died, leaving her a second time a widow. She came to Kansas in 1873, settling in Cowley County, near Cedar Vale, where she remained until her daughters were grown up, since which time she has found a home with her children, visiting among them just as suited her inclination. But for the last ten years has made her home primarily with her son, Elder A.E. Lewis. She professed faith in the Lord Jesus Christ early in life and lived an earnest consistent Christian life. She came over to Cedar Vale in October last to visit her daughter, Mrs. Fisher, and though she had been in feeble condition of health for some time, she grew worse rather suddenly and peacefully entered the eternal sleep. Six children, three sons and three daughters survive her. Her remains were laid in the family lot in Cedar Vale Cemetery.
