It is thought he died 1-2 Sept 1899. The application for a military gravestone was submitted by his grandson Derlan V. Beardsley [actually great-grandson] of Wingate Indiana. It appears to have been submitted around August 1962. Years of birth and death were entered in ink with the phrase "not shown" in red ink and underlined in blue ink 1827-1900. Stone was to be erected at Chinn Graveyard near Dale, Indiana.

Samuel Birdsley was married to Nancy Whitten in Dubois county Indiana 23 Oct 1850. Five children were born to this union: John (b1852) James Riley (b1855) Hilza Ann (b1860) Sarah H (b1861) and Mary R (b1864). Believe Nancy Whitten Beardsley died around 1865.
