In 1913 Hermenegildo, his wife Barbara and their two small children fled to the safety of the United States because Pancho Villa had added him to his 'hit list'. They were brought to a refugee camp in Juarez, Mexico by General Marcelo Careveo. They left behind a ranch, home, house furnishings and all their possessions and along with thousands of others entered this country with only the clothes on their backs. He became a successful merchant in El Paso, and for 45 years contributed to the community in many ways.
