James Nas Pitts was surrounded by his loving family when he peacefully passed away at home, on July 14, 2022, at the age of 95. He and his wife, Adele, moved to The Grove at Canopy in Tallahassee, Florida last year after living in Chattahoochee, Florida for the preceding 66 years. He was born December 15, 1926, to Richard P. Pitts and Mary Belle Rainey in Arabi, Georgia. James was the last surviving sibling and was preceded in death by both parents, sisters, Annie Pearl Pitts, Claudell Pitts, Pauline P. Stowers, Myrtice Pitts Little, brothers, Lewis P. Pitts, Ben Pitts, Warren L. Pitts, William "Bill" Pitts, Lonnie Pitts, and Frank Pitts. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years; a son and daughter in law; a daughter and son in law; 3 grandchildren and a grandchild in law; 3 great granddaughters; and a host of nieces and nephews. As a lifelong quail hunter and avid fisherman, he spent countless hours communing with nature and the beauty that it brings us. Music was a part of his soul and he loved performing, first on live radio, for many years as a Square-Dance Caller for several square-dancing clubs in the Big Bend area and more importantly for his family, especially his grandchildren. James worked as a meat department manager for most of his adult life, then worked 10 years at Apalachee Correctional Institution. After retiring in 1995, he spent many hours taking friends and family hunting and fishing, playing musical instruments and singing country songs, and spending time with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He served his community by volunteering several hours a week for many years at the American Lung Association in Tallahassee. He actively participated in the annual fundraising events. The teams he led from Chattahoochee were recognized many times as the Top Fundraising Team and he, along with his wife, were awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2000. Services will be at McAlpin Funeral Home in Sneads, Florida on Tuesday, July 19th. The viewing begins at 10 AM EDT, the service at 10:30 AM EDT, and the internment following at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Chattahoochee, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of donations to the American Lung Association and/or Big Bend Hospice.
