Brothers Christopher & Richard married sisters Martha and Tabitha Lucas. The first Will recorded in Macon County, Illinois was that of this Christopher Whitman, dated August 1, 1830, two days before his death.

It read: "Be it remembered that I, Christopher Whitman, of Macon Co., Ill. seem weak in body but sound in mind and memory, do make this, my last will and testament: That everything remain as it is until my just debts are all paid, then my property to continue in the possession of my wife as long as she remains unmarried, and none of the property sold only in case of buying land, but if my wife should in the course of life marry, the property to be sold, she to have one equal part with the heirs, that my wife should adminsiter on the estate with the assistance of James Miller, until Richard Whitman comes to this state, but if he does not come, my wife shall have the liberty of choosing an administrator. (Signed) Christopher Whitman. Test: William Miller (and) Seth C. Murphy."

(Seth C. Murphy was Christopher's son-in-law. We don't know who William Miller is, but he could perhaps have been the husband of one of Christopher's sisters Sally or of Polly.)

The winter of 1829-30 had been an unusually severe winter in Illinois and the residents suffered from it, followed then, that summer (1830) by an epidemic of Malaria. Both Christina and her son Christopher died that August; and her daughter Nancy died later that same month (or on Sept. 1), and then the father, Thomas, died that October - so was all that family death from the effects of that hard winter, or of the Malaria, or both?

The following is from the records of Barbara Renick, April 2003: Data from Ancestral file Ver.4.11 7 Nov 1993 with two submitters: Wendell D. NOTE: Ancestral Fileentry states he was born 1791 in Hardin Co., KY but Hardin County was not formed until 1792 from Nelson Co., KY which was formed in 1782.

H. R. Hines (1873) page 318: Squire S. Whitman, an honored Oregon pioneer of 1850, now deceased, was born in Hart County, Kentucky, May 1, 1818. His ancestry was English, his grandfather, Thomas WHITMAN, having been born in London, England and came to America where he settled in Kentucky. He married Christina Brunk and a son, Christopher, was born to them in Kentucky and afterward became the father of our subject. His father married Miss Martha Lucas, a native of Hart County, Kentucky, and seven children were born to them, of whom our subject was the second. Squire Whitman was reared in Hart County until thirteen, when the family removed to Illinois and settled in Macon County, and here the father died in 1831.

The mother, however, lived to be ninety-two years of age and died in Warren County at the home of her youngest son, John Whitman. Page 110: Christopher Whitman was born 10 February 1791 in Greenville County, South Carolina; died 3 August 1830 in Macon County, Illinois, and was buried there (the year of his mother's death). On 16 October 1815 in Hardin County, Kentucky, he married Martha Lucas (sister of Tabith - see p. 111), born 11 November 1796 in Hardin County, Kentucky; she died 31 March 1888 in Warren County, Illinois. The first will recorded in Macon County, Illinois, was that of Christopher Whitman dated 1 August 1830, two days before his death. Martha Lucas Whitman married (2) John Grundy Haley, son of Henry and Nancy Haley.

Incl. were photocopies of pages from the Whitman book his mother wrote. pg 1 "Thomas Whitman and His Descendants" We do not know the date of the marriage of Thomas and Christina (BRUNK) WHITMAN, but they were probably married in 1787/8. In 1790 census they had 2 sons. Their oldest son was born 7 Jun 1789 in SC, and the next child was born 10 Feb 1791 in Greenville, SC. I happened to find out that it took 18 months to complete that census of 1790, so Thomas' 2nd son got in the 1790 census with his brother. .... Thomas WHITMAN and 5 of his children came to IL in 1829. 4 of the children were married and had families. The son, Josiah, was single when they came to IL.

The histories of the counties in that part of IL all tell of the severe winter of 1829/30. There was bitter cold and deep snows. This was followed in the spring by much malaria. What these conditions had to do with the health of our ancestors can only be surmised. We do know that Thomas' 2nd son, Christopher, died in August and, in a week or so, Christina his mother died. In October Thomas himself died, and also on 30 Aug a daughter, Nancy MURPHY, died. That [autumn] the families all moved to Warren Co., IL with the exception of Martha (LUCAS) WHITMAN and her family. She had to stay in Macon Co. until her husband's estate was settled. In his will, her husband had directed that if his brother Richard came to IL, he was to be the administrator, but Richard didn't come to IL. Martha and her family later came to Warren Co., IL. ....
