John Edward Burke of Front Royal died Sunday, April 2, 2006 in Lynn Care Center following an extended illness. The Service of Christian Burial will be held at Front Royal United Methodist Church on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. conducted by the Rev. Gary Heaton and the Rev. Saundra Nottingham. Following a receptions in the church fellowship hall, interment will be at 2:00 p.m. in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Mr. Burke was born March 15, 1923 in Warren County, son of the late Lloyd Jackson Burke and Ada Balderson Burke. He graduated from Warren County High School in Front Royal. He was a graduate of the classes offered by the Stonewall Jackson Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and was the recipient of the Norman B. Bayliss Award. He later taught these classes for several years. He was also a 1954 graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Later he took advanced classes in Trust Department Management at Bucknell University. Mr. Burke began his banking career with Citizens National Bank on July 1, 1946 continuing on after the merger with F & M Bank of Winchester. He was a Senior Vice-President and Trust Officer in charge of the Front Royal operations and retired from BB&T in March, 2002. Mr. Burke was a World War II veteran serving in the 9th Army Air Force throughout Europe. He was a long-time member of the Front Royal United Methodist Church where he served on many committees and as an usher. He also was a member of the Front Royal Kiwanis Club. Surviving are his wife Mary Kirk Burke, a brother Robert W. Burke of Front Royal, two nephews William T. Burke and his wife Amy of Front Royal, and Dr. Robert L. Burke of Houston, Texas; four nieces Sharon B. Maddox and her husband Arthur of Front Royal, Leah B. Lowe and her husband David of Colorado, Marty P. Ring and her husband Timothy of Mechanicsville, and Mary Smith Sarle and her husband Tom of Winchester; an aunt Lucille B. Sealock of Front Royal; two sisters-in-law Irene W. Burke of Front Royal and Ruby Kirk Pugh of Ashland; three great-nephews Kyle Maddox of Front Royal, Zachary Lowe of Colorado, and John Ethan Burke of Front Royal; and five great-nieces Mary Maddox of Front Royal, Anna Lowe and Haley Lowe both of Colorado, Erin Ring of Mechanicsville, and Samantha Burke of Houston. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Cecil E. Burke. Pallbearers will be William T. Burke, Dr. Robert L. Burke, Timothy Ring, David Lowe, Tom Sarle, Larry Walker, Ralph Bennett, and Archie Fox. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Henry, Hollis Manuel, Eugene Elison, David Blankenship, Jack Grove, John Landis, Robert Aylor, Sam Zuckerman, Garland Eastep, Lillian Eastep, Dorothy Bennett, Frank Wines, William Barton, Dr. Floyd Bradd, III, Ray Winn, members of the Front Royal Kiwanis Club, and retired employees of F & M Bank. The family received friends on Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home. Visitors may also call at the Burke residence.
