Helen L. Shaffer, 91, of Iola, Kansas, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Windsor Place in Iola, Kansas.
She was born April 12, 1916, in Iola, Kansas, the daughter of Russell and Mabel C. (Warner) Roberts.
She grew up in Iola. She was graduated from Iola High School in 1934. She continued her education at Iola Junior College and completed her education at Emporia State University with a degree in elementary education.
She worked for the telephone office.
On Oct. 3, 1937, she was married to Harold C. Shaffer. He died March 14, 1992.
She taught first grade at McKinley Elementary School for several years before becoming the art teacher at all of Iola's elementary schools. She finished her teaching career in the second grade at Lincoln Elementary School. She retired and spent time traveling with her husband to all 50 states.
She was an active member of the Calvary United Methodist Church, Current Event Club, Dirt Diggers Garden Club, Retired Teachers Associations and Delta Kappa Gamma.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy McBride and husband, Denny, Yates Center, KS; two granddaughters, Katie LeBlanc and Kelley Mayfield; and four great-grandchildren.
A son, Lt. Jon Shaffer, a brother, William H. Roberts, and two sisters, Thelma Roberts and Dorothy Roberts, died earlier.
Funeral services will be at Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola, Kansas. The Rev. Gene Mclntosh will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kansas.
Memorials suggested to Calvary United Methodist Church or Allen County Health Care Foundation "Hospice".
