She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Behavior Science in 1972 from Brenau University, and her Masters in Education from the University of Georgia in 2012. She was a member of New Bridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Simmons; brothers, Billy Ellis and Phil Ellis; and nephew Ricky Ellis. Surviving are her stepson, Ken and wife, Lisa Simmons; sister-in-law, Linda Ellis; niece Becky and her husband, Jay Hollander and great-nephew, Devin Hollander and his twin daughters, Hadley and Briar, great-niece, Danielle and husband Corey Newman, and great-nephew, Drake Hollander. niece, Samantha and husband, Dan Barnes and great-nephew, Gus Barnes; nephew, Damon Ellis and great-niece, Peyton Ellis; and nephew, JJ and wife, Marie Ellis.
