John J. Beavers, age 70 of Monroe, died at 4:49 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27 th at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Ann Arbor. He had been in poor health for several years.
Family and friends may visit from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Rupp Funeral Home. Deacon Mike Stewart will lead the Rosary at 6 p.m. Sunday. He will lie in state at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Michael Catholic Church where Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Rev. Fr. Stephen Rooney. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post 1138, Monroe.
Born January 27, 1948 in Streator, Illinois, John was the son of John and Dorothy (Harms) Beavers.
John served his country during the Vietnam War. He served with the 101st Airborne in the U.S. Army, obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He earned the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Bronze Star, Army Accommendation Medal, Air Medal, and the Combat Infantrymans Badge.
John was employed by General Mills in Toledo for approximately 36 years before retiring in 2004. He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church and was an avid traveler. He and his wife Margie traveled in their motor home to every state (excluding Hawaii... which they visited on their honeymoon) in the U.S. And Canada. They especially enjoyed visiting the national parks. John also enjoyed flying and had a private pilots license. When his boys were young, John was very active in Boy Scouts of America. He served as a former scout leader and treasurer of Troop 502.
John is survived by his wife, Margie; two sons, Andrew of Orlando, Florida and Ryan of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Melissa (Neland) Gaynier of Monroe; two sisters, Nancy (William) Cooper of Madeira Beach, Florida and Jan Maddux of Toledo; and a grandson, James Gaynier.
John was preceded in death by his father, John Beavers; mother, Dorothy Anderson; and a niece, Jennifer Cooper-Pate.
