Essie Iris Wood Wade Mosley Hopkins Burney, daughter of Fred Mabon and Allie Dugger Wood, was born January 7, 1916, near Hartville, Missouri. She departed this life Sunday, February 29, 2004, in the Hartville Care Center, in Hartville, Missouri, at the age of eighty-eight years, one month, and twenty-two days.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Marion Wade, Henry Mosley, John Hopkins, and Nolan Burney; two brothers, Billy Wood, and an infant; three sisters, Draxy Rippee, Cleo Saladin, and an infant; and three nieces, Vera Wasson, Nadine Kelley, and Jewel Mae Jennings.
Essie is survived by a brother, Fred Wood; six nephews, Fred "Sonny" Wood, Jr., Ricky Wood, Tommy Wood, Edgar Gene Rippee, Walter Glen Rippee, and Billy Dale Rippee; two nieces, Jean Zimmer, and Freeda Robson.
She was born and raised in Wright County near the Broyles community, and attended Broyles School. She made her home in Southwest Missouri for most of her life except for a few years when she lived in the State of Washington and worked as a fruit picker. Upon her return to Missouri, Essie worked at the Holiday Inn in Springfield. After leaving Springfield, she and her sister, Cleo, operated a café in Hartville. She entered the Hartville Care Center almost one year ago.
Early in her life Essie made her profession of faith in Christ and attended the Bethel Chapel Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school.
She enjoyed crocheting, reading, quilting, and attending yard sales.
Burial will be in the Friendship Cemetery.
