WHITCOMB, WILLIAM ALVAN, 95, longtime Jacksonville resident, passed away on Jan. 23, 2008 in Jax, FL.

He was born in Umatilla, FL, Aug. 23, 1912. He married Ella Mae Fretwell, July 8, 1933; raised his family in Orlando, FL; moved to Jax., FL to be installed Secretary of Grand Lodge F.&A.M. of Florida on Sept. 27, 1960 and served as Grand Secretary until his retirement at age 70.

He is survived by his daughter, Betty Gearhart Barber (Bill); sons, William H. Whitcomb (Joyce) and Philip Alvan Whitcomb; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Each of them will remember him as a kind and loving family man who believes all tasks require - KEEP CHARGING!

In Orlando he was a charter member of Composite Lodge No. 293; Worshipful Master in 1957; District Deputy Grand Master, 16th Masonic District 1959. Member of York Rite Bodies and Scottish Rite Bodies; member of Eastern Star, Worthy Patron in 1965; member of Morocco Shrine Temple and enjoyed golf as a member of the Morocco Shrine Golf Assoc. He was a member of the Conference of Grand Secretaries, North America, President in 1976.

In his 80's he took up ballroom dancing and enjoyed dance competition.

He was a long time Gator Booster and attended the home football games for many years. He was an active member of Arlington United Methodist Church and the Stephen Ministry. He enjoyed serving the Lord through this ministry by visiting the sick and disabled and praying with and for them. He continued to pray for them after he became disabled at age 92 and could no longer visit.
