Former Port Clinton Mayor, City Councilman, and Educator Thomas M. Brown Has Passed Away

Thomas M. Brown, 82, of Port Clinton Ohio, passed away on July 10, 2022, at his residence surrounded by his family after a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinsons. Tom was born on June 25, 1940, to Virgil and Nellie Brown in Pomeroy, Ohio. After Tom graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1958, he went on to study education at University of Rio Grande.

In 1960, Tom met Helen Hurst at the University of Rio Grande. They were married June 16, 1962, in Milan, Ohio. Tom and Helen went on to have two children, a daughter Kimberly Brown and son Colonel Michael Brown.

After graduating in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education, he started his first job at Plain Local Schools in Canton Ohio as an elementary school teacher and then transferred to the Port Clinton City Schools, Port Clinton Ohio in 1966, kickstarting a 25-year career in education as an administrator, teacher, counselor, coach, and college professor. Tom would go on to earn a Master of Education from the University of Toledo and a Doctorate degree in Public Service from the University of Rio Grande.

In 1992, Tom retired from the Port Clinton City Schools and launched a new career in politics and public service. Tom was selected by then U.S. House of Representative Congressman Paul Gilmore-Ohio 5th District as the Senior District Representative from 1991-1995 at the same time serving as the President of the Port Clinton City Counsel. In 1995, Tom was elected Mayor for the City of Port Clinton, Ohio, where he held that position for the next 12 years, retiring in 2008. Tom Brown was a leader at the city, state and national levels and always served with honor, loyalty, and integrity. He believed in service before self, and he demonstrated that mantra throughout his life. Tom also served as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Representative of The Ohio Mayors Association, Trustee to the Ottawa County Community Improvement Corporation, Chairman of the Economic Restructuring Committee of the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce, Advisory Board Member for Ohio State University, Bowling Green State University and the University of Toledo, past City Councilman, and a State and Federal lobbyist. Tom also was the past president for the Port Clinton Lions Club, Rotary Club, Education Association, and Friends of Camp Perry.

Tom also served his local nonprofits and charity organization and enjoyed giving back to his community. He was a member of the Elks Club, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 32 Degree, Oliver Hazard Perry Masonic Lodge 341, Shriner Zenobia, and Dads Club of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2480.

Tom is an ordained minister and served the church's needs in Ottawa County. Tom loved the shores of Lake Erie and enjoyed boating and fishing. He was a member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club. Tom was an avid reader, writer, golfer, and enjoyed playing the piano and the trumpet. Tom was a committed fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Guardians.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Nellie Brown and parent in-laws Gilbert and Pauline Wallace. He is survived by his wife Helen of 60 years, daughter Kimberly and (Kelli) Brown of Port Clinton, Ohio, and son Colonel Michael and (Ann Marie) Brown of Middleboro, Massachusetts and six grandchildren: Ashley and (Keith) Knittel, Lauren and (Zach) Diehl, Shane and (Kelly) Brown, Madison Brown and (Ray) Tyree, Cory McDonald and (Melissa) Parsons, and Ashe O'Neill and one great-granddaughter Freya McDonald. Tom has one brother Fred and (Sabre) Brown of Tampa, Florida he is survived by several cousins, nephews and nieces.

Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, in Port Clinton, Ohio on July 30, 2022 with visiting hours from 9:00-11:00am with funeral services starting at 11:00am. Graveside service will follow the funeral service at Riverview Cemetery in Port Clinton, Ohio.
