Wife of Elijah Pugh, married 1784.

As a teenager, Ruth carried messages across the battlefield to soldiers. British soldiers are said to have called for her to stop during one of her missions. Fortunately, she was able to slip the documents she carried into a campfire before they could discover her secret. [Note: Although the inscription on her gravestone indicates Ruth died in 1848, she was still living in the household of a daughter at the time of the 1850 census. A family Bible record gives her date of death as 13 March 1852. Thanks to Mark Morrow for locating this information.]

She was the daughter of Peter de Julian and Mary Beals.
