Daughter of John Reddin and Flora Alice Derham Collins, wife of William Luin Baker.

MULLINS - Mrs. Flora Jean Collins Baker, 91, widow of William L. "Bill" Baker, of Mullins entered a better world during the early morning of July 9, 2022, at MUSC Health Florence Medical Center with her family by her side after a brief illness and a long, full life.

Ms. Flora was born at home in Mullins on December 12, 1930, a daughter of the late John R. Collins, Jr. and the late Flora Derham Collins. She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Ann Huggins, and husband, William L. Baker.

Flora was a graduate of Mullins High School and Coker College. Her first job was teaching Business at Shallotte High School in North Carolina, where she met Coach Bill Baker. They were married in Mullins on September 2, 1956.

Flora held secretarial positions for the Air Force at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Upper Heyford in England. For a year she was a Field Rep. for Congressman Ed Young (R-SC) in his Conway office. When Bill retired from the Air Force in 1980, the moved to Wilmington, NC. Flora was an instructor at Miller-Motte Business College for a year and then a staff member on the Thomas S. Rhodes (R) Campaign for Congress. During two national elections, she was the Manager of the Republican Headquarters in Wilmington.

In 1995, Flora and Bill returned to her family home in Gapway, outside Mullins. They restored the Collins home where she and her sister, Ann, were born.

Flora was a member of the Mullins First Baptist Church and the Fidelis Class.

She is survived by two sons, Norris Collins Baker (Beth) of Greenville, SC, and William Scott Baker (Susan) of Charlotte, NC; 6 grandchildren; and 1 great grandson.

A celebration of life for Mrs. Baker will be held Tuesday, July 12 at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of Mullins First Baptist Church, with the Reverend Robbie Baxley officiating. Mrs. Baker will then be laid to rest next to her husband in the cemetery at Gapway Baptist Church, with the services directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.
