James Harrington was the son of Lot Harrington and Sarah Patterson Sheldon. James grandparents were Thomas Harrington and Freelove Harrington. James's first wife was Mary Haws. He later married Catherine Ann Bolton.

James Harrington Sr. came to Ogden Township, Lenawee County, Michigan, in 1837, from the Township of Bastard, Leeds County, Ontario. James parents, had been married previously and he was the only child of this marriage.

In 1840 James is listed in the federal census as living in Ogden near Truman Sheldon. Two adult females, and two adult males and a male child under 5 years are living in the household.

In 1850 James Sr. and Mary Harrington lived in Ogden with their children. The federal census lists James as James Herrington.

In 1860 James Sr. and Mary Harrington lived in Ogden with their children, John Harrington age 19, Caroline Harrington age 17, James Harrington age 13, Harris Harrington age 9 and James mother, Sarah Harrington age 88. Family records indicate that Mary Harrington died in 1856 of consumption.

In 1870 and 1880 James and Catherine were living in Ogden, Michigan. Catherine's son Clarence Amberson and the two youngest children Addah and Daniel were living in the household. James was farming. The 1880 federal census lists James as James Herrington. The 1880 census also indicates that James parents were born in Vermont.

James Harrington was one of the founders of the Methodist Church in Blissfield, Michigan. Later he joined the United Bretheren Church and was member of the Zion Class until the split in the United Brethern Church in about 1888.

James died of pneumonia, attended by Dr. Eccles. His funeral was held in the old Zion Church, the sermon delivered by Rev. Rau, and he was buried beside his mother, Sarah Patterson. He was the seventh generation of his Harrington family in America.

James' father Lot Harrington had a son by his first wife, Sylvia Sage, also named James Harrington
