He was born on September 10, 1936, in Toccoa, Georgia, to the late James and Eunice Maxwell who had many children of whom John survived.

He served in the US Navy for 22 years and retired as a Master Chief and landed in Texas with his late wife Doris Jean Maxwell of 35 years. He went on to have another full career as a Nuclear Inspection Quality Engineer in several power plant operators in Texas and across the country. He retired from Texas Utilities after 20-plus years.

After Doris passed, he met the next love of his life, Sylvia Ann Reeves of Tampa, Florida. He moved to Tampa with Sylvia and traveled the country in the RV and made many trips abroad for the next 16 years until Sylvia passed in 2020. He is survived by Sylvia's children Kathy Perez Dutton and Joseph Perez.

He was an avid golfer and spent a portion of his time at the MacDill AFB golf course competing against the other military retirees.

He is survived by his son John T Maxwell, Jr. and wife Jace L Maxwell of Keller TX, and daughter adoptee Monica James and husband Mark James of Arlington, Texas.
