Robert Lee Gates was the son of Charles H Gates and Charlotte (Lottie) Grace Watson. His siblings were Frederick Clinton Gates, Galeta M Gates Randerson, Benjamin G Gates, Charles H Gates, Jr and Paul J Gates. The five Gates brothers were raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and made records in Iowa athletics. According to the Des Moines Sunday Register February 4, 1917, the Gates family came into prominence in 1904 when Robert almost single-handed battled the local schools in the city championship football games. He was a great football player to quote the article. Bob Gates also won a medal for his accomplishments in track. He married Daisy Pearl Wilcox in 1906 and they moved to San Antonio. They had three children Phillip Lee Gates, Sue Roberta Gates, and Mary Louise Gates. Bob lived in San Antonio for most of his life. He worked as a meat buyer for Swift for many years.

Bob Gates was not the father of George J Riddle and any family trees claiming so are incorrect.
