Dorothy Mildred Nelson, 92, passed away at the University Hospital on July 3, 2022. Dorothy was born November 10, 1929 to William and Myrtle (Wright) Griffin. She was united in marriage to Joseph Nelson on October 11, 1953.
A visitation will be held Monday, July 11, 2022 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am with funeral services at 11:00 am, both at Memorial Funeral Home, Columbia. Burial to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The heart of Dorothy's life was her family. Her home was full of photos that were displayed proudly, and every member of the family knew how much she loved them. Her grandchildren remember smashing pennies on the train tracks, cooking together, picking blackberries, and taking in her strong opinions. Those strong opinions in turn made for strong, independent children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, the door always open for a cup of tea or coffee, and her yard was home to running children and laughter. Dorothy's home was the center of many family gatherings and sweet memories. She knew everything about flowers and plants and used her talents to paint them. She could take even the saddest plants and bring them back to life. She also enjoyed doing crafts with the grandkids, often going to the senior center to make new things.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her children, Roger White of Ashland, MO; Eugene Nelson of Ashland, MO; Christine Gillham of Taft Heights, CA; and Rosetta Nelson-Chick of New Bloomfield, MO; as well as 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Though it is hard to let her go, Dorothy took comfort in knowing that it was her time. An angel came to take her Home to her Savior where she is young again. We can now take comfort that this was not goodbye, but till we meet again.
