Ben Collins Pickett, 79, died Sunday, April 26th, 1998, in Fort Worth.

Ben Collins Pickett was born April 2, 1919, in Peden, Tarrant County, and was the son of Perry E. and Dennie Swift Pickett. He entered the Masonic Home and School in Fort Worth from Azle Masonic Lodge 601 on Jan. 8, 1925. He graduated from high school May 24, 1937.

Mr. Pickett was employed at MidContinent Oil Supply Co. in Fort Worth from June 1937 in the Fort Worth office as clerk and at the Kilgore branch as a warehouseman until November 1941.

He was inducted into the Army on Feb. 12, 1942, at Camp Wolters, Texas. He served as a staff sergeant in the 9222nd Technical Service Unit, Transportation Corps, Hg. Ships Complement. He served in the invasion of North Africa in 1943, in Oran, Algeria, and Casa Blanca, French Morocco; in South Pacific in 1945 in such places as New Guinea and the Marshall Islands; and in the invasion of the Philippine Islands, Luzon, in 1944. He was discharged Nov. 17, 1945, after 35 months overseas.

He was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one bronze star, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, European, Africa, Middle East Campaign Medal with one bronze star.

In January 1946, Mr. Pickett entered the University of Texas at Austin School of Business Administration, where he attended until April 1948. He was employed by Century Insurance Co. in 1948 in the accounting department; Consolidated Vultee Aircraft in Fort Worth (later General Dynamics); Pure Oil Co., Jal, N.M., in the warehouse department, and Snyder, Texas, for five years; and Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. in Henderson, Texas, in the warehouse department and as a production clerk.

Mr. Pickett was a member of Westcliff United Methodist Church in Fort Worth, the Veterans of Foreign Wars. American Association of Retired Persons and American Legion. His hobbies were yard work, photography, golf, painting, and watching the news and sports on television
