Carrol Peterson
Carrol Peterson, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully on September 9, 1988 after a courageous struggle with cancer. Carrol entered this word on July 26, 1919, following her twin brother Harrol by several minutes. She was the sixth of nine children born to Herbert and Inga Collins of Clear Lake and Gary, SD. After graduating from high school, she entered nurses; training in Watertown, SD. Upon receiving her certification as a registered nurse, she accepted employment at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, MN. There she met her future husband of more than four decades, Robert (Chip) Peterson.
During World War II she moved to New York City to be close to Chip, who was serving in the Navy. While in New York City, she gave birth to a son, Robert Jr. In 1946, Carrol and her family returned to Willmar, where they lived for several years. From Willmar they moved to Anoka, then Fergus Falls, Litchfield, and Morris, MN. Although she briefly resumed nursing career while in Litchfield; in Anoka she began what would eventually be her second career, that of a businesswoman.
When their son graduated from high school in Morris in 1962, Carrol and Chip "left home." They first purchased and operated a restaurant in Marshalltown, Iowa, and then to Hobbs, New Mexico, where they purchased and operated a motel. From Hobbs they moved to Phoenix, AZ where Carrol lived the last quarter-century of her life.
Although illnesses plagued her in Phoenix, the years spent there were the happiest of her life. She and Chip joined the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, and she became active in several circles. Friendship came easily to Carrol, and she created friends as a gardener creates flowers. While in Phoenix, Carrol and Chip were equal partners, and she continually provide encouragement and assistance.
Carrol was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Pearl and Avis; and one brother, Vern. She is survived by her husband, son, daughter-in-law (the former Diane Femrite of Glenwood, MN) and three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Jennifer and Matthew, of Austin, TX; brothers Dean and Arvin of Clear Lake and Harrol of Madison, MN, and sisters Evelyn McKee of Clear lake and Orieth Ribstein of Sioux Falls, SD.
Carrol Peterson was an extraordinary woman. She epitomized the proverbial optimist who saw a silver lining in every cloud, regardless of how threatening it looked. More importantly, she was genuinely kind, perhaps even too kind at times. Carrol was universally loving and universally loved. She will be eternally missed by those she touched; her passing leaves a void that cannot be filled.
Funeral services were held on September 17th at 2 pm at the United Methodist Church in Gary with Rev. Russell Peirce officiating. Casket bearers were Harley Nelson, Doug McKee, Ardell Collins, Jim Collins, Steve Ribstein and Danny Collins.
