Pearl Heaton Peden
Pearl Heaton Peden, age 92, a former Gary resident, passed away March 12, 1996 at Rapid City where she had lived the past 18 years. Pearl Nellie, born June 9, 1903 at her parent's farm home in Polk County near Euclid, MN. was seventh of the thirteen children of Ward Perry and Edith Cosgrove Heaton. When Pearl was three years old the family moved to a farm near Sterling, ND, in Burleigh County. Nine years later, in March of 1915, the Heaton family moved to Deuel County. They and their livestock arrived by train at Moritz and they then proceeded to their farm in Glenwood Township. Pearl attended School District 57,l northwest of Gary, graduated from Gary High School and attended South Dakota State University. On September 11, 1923 she was united in marriage to Maurice Peden, son of Eli and Emma Rowe Peden. They were the parents of eight children and lived on their farm three miles northwest of Gary until Maurice's death in May of 1955.
She then became the head resident of a girl's dormitory at SDSU in Brookings and was also a counselor for Girls State in Mitchell. Later she purchased the Lou Huffman house in Gary and lived there until 1978 when she moved to Rapid City.
Pearl was a member of the Gary United Methodist Church for over 75 years. She was active in the Women's Study Club, Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years, Wecotah Extension Club, Women's Society for Christian Service, and was the official school census taker for Gary for many years. She was also the leader of the little Wecotah 4-H Club and was president of the Gary PTA under whose sponsorship the first Girl Scout Troop was formed. She initiated the first hot lunch program in the Gary School, and served on numerous boards and committees throughout the county and state.
She is survived by two sons, Wendell of Rapid City and David of Muskegon, MI; four daughters, Edythe Cascini of Lincoln, NE, Arlyce Sebastian of Rapid City, Mildred Bullock of Princeton, Mn and Ruth Whipp of Ames, IA; 26 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; a sister, Clarice Schutjer of Oskaloosa, IA; and three sisters-in-law; Lena (Perry) Heaton and Eva (Irving) Heaton both of Gary, and Helen (Lewis ) Heaton Abbott of Bullhead city, AZ. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by an infant son, Dwight, a daughter, Vivian Phillips, two great grandsons, her parents, seven brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services were held on March 16, 1996 at 1:30 pm at the Gary United Methodist Church with Rev. Peggy Zerface officiating.
