Isabelle Oswald
Funeral services for Isabelle Oswald, age 96 of Clear Lake wil be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 5, 1998 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clear Lake. Father Joe Short will officiate. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery at Gary. Mrs. Karl Oswald passed away Tuesday morning, December 1, 1998 at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Special music will be sung by Brad Felix. Fran Fritz will be the song leader and Clarice Uckert will play the organ. Casketbearers will be Richard, Dan and James Parkhill, Mark Oswald, and Stephen and Dwight Warkenthien.
Mary Isabelle Oswald was born on December 7, 1901 in Clark, SD to Richard and Agnes J. (Craney) Grigg. She attended grade school in Clark. She moved with her family to Watertown in order to attend the Immaculate Conception School and was among the first graduating class of 1920. As a child Isabelle dreamed of being a teacher and she attended Northern Teachers College in Aberdeen, Black Hills College in Rapid City, University of South Dakota in Vermillion, and Mount Marty in Watertown. Isabelle taught in rural schools, among them Valley View, Watertown, Clark, Gary and Clear Lake. She also taught at the School For The Blind in Gary and continued to teach at the School For The Blind when it moved to Aberdeen. Isabelle attended Wayne State University at Detroit, MI. to prepare for teaching in the school for the visually impaired in Aberdeen.
On June 20, 1940, Isabelle was united in marriage to Karl Oswald at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Clark, SD. The couple lived at Gary where they farmed and Isabelle taught school. Mr. Oswald died in February, 1975. Isabelle served as a delegate for the state of South Dakota at the National Education Convention in St. Louis, Missouri. She was active in the Soil Cinservation projects in the area and the Association of Retarded Children (A.R.C.). Isabelle was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and Altar Society in Gary. She was also active in the home extension clubs in Deuel County and served as chairman.
Isabelle is survived by one sister, Muriel Grigg of Watertown SD; one sister-in-law, JoAnn Oswald of Watertown, SD; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Karl Oswald; one brother, Phillip Grigg; and one sister, Dorothy Parkhill.
Isabelle's family would like to thank you for your support and prayers. Following the services at the cemetery everyone is invited to join the family for a time of fellowship and a lunch that will be served in the Gary American Legion in downtown Gary.
