Educator, minister and farmer. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Claflin University in the 1890s, received a doctorate of divinity from Claflin and Benedict Colleges in 1907, and completed additional study at the University of Chicago. When the Colored Normal Industrial Agricultural and Mechanical College of South Carolina (now South Carolina State University) was organized in 1896, Nix joined the faculty as head of the Mathematics Department, later becoming Dean. Also a Baptist religious leader, Nix was instrumental in the establishment of Orangeburg's Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. In addition, he owned and operated a 200 acre farm and was a member of the Masons and the Knights of Pythias. Nix's wife was Sylvia Robinson of Orangeburg.
