Herbert Alonzo Oliver was born in Dodge Co., Wisconsin on August 3, 1844. It was their he met Elizabeth Cochrane, but it wasn't until Dec 3, 1867 that they were married in Mower Co. Minnesota.

Herbert served as a Private in Company H of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. It was probably during his time in the military that the Cochrane family moved to Minnesota, so Herbert headed that direction once he was discharged.

Herbert was the youngest of eight children born to Peter W. and Julia Oliver. The first seven children were all born in New York, and it may have been in New York that the Oliver's and the Cochrane's met and came west together. Herbert and his brother Sidney were among the party of four that came to Dakota Territory with Byron Cochrane in 1872.

Herbert and Elizabeth had four children, George Ira, born about 1868, Junietta born in Sept, 1872, Edna born in 1874 and Jessie May born Oct 30, 1879.

Herbert and Elizebeth lived on the Northeast corner of Lake Cochrane, however at the time of Herbert's death, on March 5, 1923, they were living in the city of Gary. The Oliver farm was what those around the lake know as the Bostic farm. The farm building are no longer there. Lake Oliver was named after Herbert Oliver as it was his property that was to the east of the lake.
