Anthropologist and Linguist. She is famous for her research on Native American languages and is best known for her studies of Wiyot, Coeur d'Alene, and Navajo. While living with the Navajo she learned to weave, tend sheep, and do the other work expected of Navajo women, all while learning to speak Navajo fluently. Among her many publications was Navaho Religion.
