Graveside services will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, July 7, 2022 at Coastal Carolina State Veteran Cemetery, Jacksonville, with Reverend Greg Heath officiating.
Bill is survived by his eldest son Timothy Spencer (Kathy) Sneads Ferry, NC, his daughter, Cathy McDonald (Mack) and youngest son William, "Billy" Spencer Jr. (Fran) Richlands, NC. Bill has five grandchildren: Sarah Young (Jimmy) Germantown, Md, Holly Dumpfy, Moore, SC, Aaron Spencer (Courtney) Sneads Ferry, NC, Susan Bass (Lane) Murfreesboro, NC and Olivia Taggert Richlands, NC. There are six great grandchildren: Wesley Robson, Richlands, NC, Colin Hoskinson, Moore, SC, Paxton Spencer, Sneads Ferry, NC, Maggie Bass, Murfreesboro, NC and Ella Young, Germantown, MD.
Bill, as he was known to most, was a dedicated, career member of the US Navy and used his experiences from that service to build further his live-long commitment to his family, community and God. This was exampled in areas of service after military retirement, as he became a strong leader in community activities like Richlands Little League, Bethlehem Baptist Church Sunday School, and even service at the Albert Ellis Airport. He was seen by those he touched as a tough, but caring man, willing to work hard for what would help others. He was especially committed to his family and ensuring that he could support them in their immediate and future plans. He enjoyed preparing garden space for Jean and could often be found in the kitchen with her, canning vegetables and preparing for Fall harvests and holidays. Many of us have been recipients of his homemade Christmas fruitcakes during the holiday season. He was so proud to share these with friends and family every year. Bill was always ready to help others and spent his live ensuring that he modeled the philosophy that "it is better to give than to receive".
There are not sufficient words from the family to express the gratitude to those who have been part of the support and care during the last year he has spent at home. Thank you to Onslow Senior Center, as well as special caregivers: Willie Mae Hatchell, Karen (Kay) Rhodes-Monk, grand-daughter Olivia McDonald, Ms. Lizzie Edmondson, Wellcare Home Health, and the Cape Fear Hospice staff. Bill's physician was Dr. Leslie Myers at the Camp Lejeune Naval Medical Center. Dr. Myers treated "Mr. Spencer" with the utmost respect. Dr. Myers left no stone unturned while caring for him. The Spencer family will always remember Dr. Myers as our hero.
