Syl was a farmer, a brick masonry, and built a steam cotton gin and gristmill for the town's farming opperations. E. B. Fleming stated in his 1902 book entitled, Early History of Hopkins County Texas, of Sylvanus Minter, "He is one of the best men in Hopkins County. To know him is to love him. He is a big-hearted nobleman, meriting all the respect and esteem he enjoys."

Syl first married Frances Elizabeth Stephens on 03 December 1873 in Stephenville, Fannin County, TX (a town founded by Elizabeth's brother). They had 7 children:

Glen Lafayette Minter (1875-1939),

Ruth Virginia Minter-Hargrave (1887-1967),
Mary Annie Ruth Minter-Johnston (1893-1971), &
Lizzie-Mae-Minter (1894-1908).

After Elizabeth passed away, Sylvanus married Carrie Cowser on 23 August 1900, and they had ONE son:

Raymond Grey Minter (1901-1953).

Sylvanus married Viera "Bama" Horton on 29 December 1903, and they had ONE daughter:
